No hotel sits inside Rajaji's core zone — but you don't need one. Haridwar is 8 km from the nearest gate. Dehradun is 35 km. Rishikesh is 20 km. Every budget, every style, every zone covered.
Haridwar puts you within 15–40 minutes of three zone gates. Widest hotel selection across all budgets. Combine safari with Ganga Aarti and Har Ki Pauri. Best overall base for most Rajaji visitors.
Jolly Grant Airport just 18 km from Mohand gate — ideal for fly-in visitors. Good range of quality hotels. Best base for Dehradun-side zones and for visitors combining safari with Mussoorie.
20 km to Motichur gate, 35 km to Chilla. Perfect for visitors combining Rajaji safari with river rafting, yoga and Rishikesh sightseeing. Scenic river-setting hotels at all price points.
Sleep inside or adjacent to the park boundary. Wake up to forest sounds and wildlife. Book via Uttarakhand Forest Tourism portal — availability extremely limited. Reserve months in advance.
Haridwar is the most convenient base for Rajaji safari visitors — three zone gates within 40 minutes, India's widest range of pilgrim and tourism hotels at every price point, and easy access to the Ganga Aarti and city sightseeing after your morning safari. Hotels along the canal road and near Har Ki Pauri are the most sought-after; for safari visitors, hotels near Haridwar bypass or Ranipur Road provide faster early-morning gate access.
Haridwar has hundreds of clean guesthouses and dharamshalas around Har Ki Pauri and Railway Station area. Basic amenities — clean rooms, attached bathroom, ceiling fan. Some include simple breakfast. Ideal for visitors on tight budgets who only need a room to sleep before the 5 AM departure.
Haridwar's mid-range segment is excellent — several clean, well-maintained 3-star hotels with AC rooms, restaurant, 24-hr front desk, reliable hot water and taxi booking. Hotels on the canal bank or near Laltarao Bridge area are best for safari + sightseeing combination visits. Ask for early checkout or 4 AM wake-up call availability.
Haridwar's premium segment includes several well-appointed river-view hotels and spa resorts on the Ganga banks. Amenities include pool, spa, multi-cuisine restaurant, concierge-arranged safari transport and early-morning departure service. Best for families and couples who want comfort before and after the safari.
Haridwar hotel tip: For morning safari at 6 AM, you need to leave your hotel by 5:00–5:15 AM. When booking, confirm the hotel can arrange: (1) 4:30 AM wake-up call, (2) pre-packed early breakfast or thermos of tea, (3) pre-booked taxi for 5:00 AM departure. Most 3-star+ hotels accommodate this without issue. Budget guesthouses may not — check at check-in.
Most hotels. Best city access. 20 min to Chilla, 12 min to Motichur. Watch Ganga Aarti at dusk after safari.
Slightly outside city. Quieter. Faster NH 58 access for pre-dawn departures. Less traffic at 5 AM.
Closest to Chilla gate (~10 km). Limited options but those available are very convenient for early departures.
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and India's best-connected city for Rajaji's Dehradun-side zones. Jolly Grant Airport (18 km from Mohand gate) makes same-day fly-in safari possible from Delhi. The city has a strong range of quality hotels particularly in the Rajpur Road, Clement Town and Saharanpur Road areas. Good for visitors who want Rajaji safari + Mussoorie hill station in one trip.
Dehradun's Clock Tower area and Rajpur Road have many clean budget hotels with AC rooms, WiFi and hot water. Good base for visitors who want minimal spend and are primarily in Dehradun for the morning safari to Mohand or Ranipur zones.
Dehradun's mid-range is particularly strong — several well-managed hotels on Rajpur Road, Saharanpur Road and near ISBT with good rooms, restaurant, parking and concierge services. Pre-book safari taxi from hotel the evening before. Rajpur Road hotels give best access to NH 58 toward Mohand.
Dehradun has several excellent premium and heritage properties — some colonial-era estates on Rajpur Road converted to boutique hotels, and modern luxury business hotels near the airport. Full safari concierge service, high-quality dining, pool and spa. Best for business travellers and couples wanting a premium short break.
Fly-in safari tip: Delhi–Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) daily flights from 6:00 AM onward. Land at 7 AM, taxi to Mohand gate in 30 minutes, check in for second morning slot (8:00–9:30 AM at some zones) or pre-book the full morning safari on the booking portal. Return flight Delhi by 6 PM. Entire trip in a single day — no hotel needed for 1-day visits.
Rishikesh combines superbly with a Rajaji safari — the world capital of yoga and adventure sports is just 20 km from Motichur gate. A typical Rishikesh + Rajaji itinerary: morning safari at Motichur (6–9:30 AM), return to Rishikesh by 11 AM, afternoon Ganga rafting or yoga class, evening at the ghats. The hotel range in Rishikesh skews toward backpacker/budget and mid-range, with some excellent ashram-style and resort options.
Rishikesh has India's most vibrant backpacker scene — the Lakshmanjhula and Tapovan areas have hundreds of clean guesthouses, yoga ashrams offering accommodation, and riverside cafes. Many offer river views from rooftop terraces. Budget travellers can find excellent-value rooms with bathroom, WiFi and basic breakfast included.
The mid-range in Rishikesh is excellent — several well-designed boutique hotels and resorts on the Ganga bank with terraced gardens, clean pools, yoga pavilions and in-house ayurvedic treatments. These properties often run their own safari day-trip packages to Motichur and Chilla zones.
Rishikesh has some of India's finest jungle-bank luxury tent resorts — elaborate canvas glamping operations with four-poster beds, open-air showers, private decks over the Ganga, fine dining and complete spa facilities. Several offer full concierge-arranged Rajaji safari excursions as part of their wellness packages.
Rishikesh combination tip: Book Motichur zone evening safari (3:00–6:30 PM) on the same day as your morning Ganga rafting — most rafting tours end by noon. Morning: raft the Ganga. Afternoon: Motichur wildlife safari. Evening: return to Rishikesh by 7 PM. One of the most exhilarating single-day itineraries in the Indian Himalayan foothills.
Forest Department rest houses are the most immersive accommodation option near Rajaji — some are located inside the park boundary or directly adjacent to zone gates. Waking up to the sounds of jungle birds, hearing an elephant trumpet in the distance at 4 AM, and walking to the safari gate in minutes — these are experiences that no hotel in Haridwar or Dehradun can replicate. Availability is extremely limited and demand is high. Book via the Uttarakhand Forest Tourism portal as early as possible — ideally 3–6 months in advance for peak season.
Located near Chilla Range Office, adjacent to the Chilla zone gate. Most popular forest accommodation in Rajaji — waking up here means you are at the gate before any city-based visitor. Night-time wildlife calls, dawn chorus, immediate gate access.
Adjacent to Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve — surrounded by wetland grassland with Barasingha visible from the rest house veranda at dawn and dusk. The most wildlife-proximate accommodation in the entire Rajaji landscape.
Book through uttarakhandforest.org or the Forest Department's wildlife tourism portal. Create an account and search "rest house" under the accommodation section.
Peak season (Dec–Jan) rest house availability is booked within days of the booking window opening. Plan well ahead for winter visits.
If the portal shows no availability, call the specific Range Office — cancellations sometimes free up rooms that aren't immediately updated online.
Rest houses have basic meals arranged by the caretaker — simple Indian food, tea and breakfast. Carry any special dietary requirements or snacks. Power supply may be limited in some locations.
Forest rest house advantage: The single biggest benefit of forest accommodation is the pre-dawn wildlife experience. Chilla rest house guests regularly report elephant herds passing within metres of the rest house at 3–4 AM. Jhilmil rest house guests wake up to Barasingha stags grazing on the grassland outside their window. These encounters are not part of any formal safari — they happen because you are sleeping where the wildlife lives.
Peak season prices: Hotel rates in Haridwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh are 30–50% higher during school vacation windows (Dec 20 – Jan 10, Apr–May). Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for peak season stays to get best rates.
Before booking, verify: 4:30 AM wake-up call available, taxi can be pre-booked for 5 AM departure, reception staffed overnight. Many hotels claim 24hr service but actually have a security guard who cannot arrange taxis at 4:30 AM.
The most reliable approach for early-morning safari taxi is to ask your hotel to book it the evening before and confirm with the driver directly. Hotel-arranged taxis are more accountable than app-based bookings for 5 AM slots.
Arrive at your hotel the evening before your safari — not the morning of. This avoids rushed check-in, gives you time to arrange the taxi and alarm, and ensures you are rested for the early departure.
No food inside the park — you need something before the 6 AM safari. Ask the hotel to prepare a packed breakfast or at minimum a thermos of tea/coffee for your 5 AM departure. Most mid-range+ hotels accommodate this with advance notice.
Download Google Maps offline area for your base city before travelling. Mobile connectivity can be patchy on some forest approach roads — offline maps are essential for confident early-morning navigation.
