Transport Options

Four Ways to Reach Rajaji National Park

Road, rail, air and bus — every option covered with honest advice on which works best for your situation

By Road

Self-drive or hired taxi
Best for: All visitors

Road access is the most flexible option — you control departure time, can carry all your safari gear, and can choose which zone to visit. NH 58 (Delhi–Haridwar–Dehradun) runs directly past Rajaji's zone gates. From Delhi, the drive is 5–6 hours depending on traffic. From Haridwar or Dehradun, gates are 8–45 km away.

Self-drive

Google Maps navigation directly to the zone gate. Roads are good quality. Standard hatchbacks and sedans handle all routes without issue.

Hired taxi

Pre-book an outstation taxi from Delhi, Haridwar or Dehradun. Agree on round-trip fare and waiting time at gate. Driver waits at gate during the 3.5-hour safari.

By Train

To Haridwar or Dehradun station
Best for: Delhi visitors

Train is the most economical and comfortable option from Delhi. Both Haridwar Junction and Dehradun Railway Station are well-connected on the Delhi–Haridwar–Dehradun Shatabdi route. From either station, hire a pre-booked taxi to the zone gate — 15–60 minutes depending on which zone you have booked.

Haridwar Junction

Nearest station for Chilla, Motichur and Jhilmil Jheel zones. 4.5–5.5 hrs from Delhi on Shatabdi Express.

Dehradun Station

Nearest for Ranipur and Mohand zones. 5–6 hrs from Delhi. Taxi 35–50 km to zone gates.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun
Best for: Out-of-state visitors

Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) is the closest airport to Rajaji National Park. Daily flights from Delhi (45 min), Mumbai (2 hrs) and other major cities. From the airport, a direct taxi reaches Mohand Gate in 30 minutes — making this the shortest airport-to-safari-gate connection among North India's national parks.

Mohand Gate

18 km · 30 min from Jolly Grant Airport — closest gate to airport.

Chilla Gate (via Haridwar)

~60 km · 75 min from airport via Haridwar bypass.

By Bus

Delhi to Haridwar / Dehradun
Best for: Budget travellers

Regular state-run (UPSRTC/UTTC) and private Volvo buses run between Delhi and Haridwar/Dehradun from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Journey is 5–7 hours. From Haridwar Bus Stand or Dehradun ISBT, hire a local taxi to the zone gate — shared autos do not go to the gates. The bus is the most economical long-distance option.

Delhi → Haridwar

Frequent buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate · ₹350–700 · 5–6 hrs · good Volvo options overnight.

From Haridwar Bus Stand

Hire local auto to Haridwar city taxi stand, then book outstation taxi to gate. Shared transport to gates not available.

Travel Tips — Getting to the Gate
Plan Your Departure Time Backwards

Safari starts at 6:00 AM. Gates open at 5:30 AM. Arrive at gate by 5:45 AM. Add your drive time from hotel to calculate when to leave. Most visitors underestimate how long the gate paperwork takes.

Pre-book Your Taxi for 5 AM

Do not assume you can hail a taxi at 4:30–5:00 AM. Pre-book your taxi the evening before. Confirm the booking by phone at 9 PM. Most zones are on forest roads where no auto-rickshaw goes.

Download Maps Offline

Mobile network coverage on some forest zone roads is patchy — particularly Ranipur and Mohand zone approach roads. Download the Google Maps offline area for Haridwar / Dehradun district before departing.

Fuel Up Before Forest Roads

No petrol stations on the approach roads to any zone gate. Fill up in Haridwar city, Raiwala, Mohand village or Ranipur village before turning off the main highway. Last station is typically 8–12 km from the gate.

Carry Cash + Have UPI Ready

All gates accept UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm) and most accept debit cards. But cash is the safest backup — particularly for early morning when connectivity at the gate may be slow. Carry ₹5,000 minimum in cash for a 2-person Gypsy safari.

Call the Gate Office Before Departing

For less popular zones (Ranipur, Mohand), call the range office the evening before to confirm gate staff will be available at your arrival time. For peak-season Chilla — call to confirm your booking is registered.

FAQ

How to Reach — Common Questions

From Delhi, take NH 58 toward Haridwar — the same highway used for Dehradun, Mussoorie and Char Dham pilgrimage routes. The route goes Delhi → Meerut → Muzaffarnagar → Roorkee → Haridwar (250 km, 5–6 hours). Exit at Haridwar for Chilla, Motichur or Jhilmil Jheel zones. For Ranipur and Mohand zones, continue on NH 72 toward Dehradun for a further 35–45 km. Depart by 11 PM for a dawn arrival at the gate — this avoids Delhi–Meerut morning traffic which can add 90–120 minutes. Google Maps navigation works well throughout.

Haridwar Junction is the nearest major railway station for Rajaji's most popular zones — just 8 km from Motichur gate and 15 km from Chilla gate. It is well-connected from Delhi (4.5–5.5 hrs), Mumbai (via Dehradun route), and all major North Indian cities. For Dehradun-side zones (Ranipur at 45 km, Mohand at 35 km), Dehradun Railway Station is more convenient. From either station, hire a private taxi — shared autos do not run to any zone gate.

No — no public transport (bus, auto-rickshaw or shared taxi) operates directly to any Rajaji zone gate. The zone approach roads branch off the main highway at points not served by regular routes, and the gates themselves are several kilometres inside the forest fringe. Private taxis, hired cabs (Ola/Uber for city sections), and self-driven vehicles are the only practical options. If you are on a very tight budget, a shared taxi from Haridwar or Dehradun to the nearest highway junction is possible — but you will need to walk or hire a local vehicle for the final 3–8 km to the gate.

Yes — Google Maps navigates reliably to all five Rajaji zone gates. Search for the specific Range Office by name — "Chilla Range Office Rajaji", "Motichur Range Office Rajaji", "Ranipur Range Rajaji National Park" etc. — rather than just searching "Rajaji National Park" which may direct you to a central park boundary marker. The Range Office locations are marked on Google Maps and GPS coordinates are provided in the table on this page. Download the offline map area (Haridwar / Dehradun district) before your journey in case of patchy mobile network on approach roads to Ranipur and Mohand zones.

For a one-day Delhi–Rajaji–Delhi trip, two options work well. Option 1 (Train): Board the overnight Mussoorie Express from Delhi (9:20 PM), arrive Haridwar at 5:00 AM, taxi to Chilla gate in 25 minutes, morning safari 6:00–9:30 AM, return to Haridwar by taxi, board an afternoon train back to Delhi — total trip under 24 hours, no hotel required. Option 2 (Air): Take the first morning flight Delhi–Dehradun (6:00–7:00 AM, 45 min), taxi from Jolly Grant Airport to Mohand Gate (30 min, 18 km), morning safari 8:30 AM or book the second morning slot, return to airport and fly Delhi in the afternoon. The air option is more expensive but avoids overnight travel entirely.
