  • ✅ Best light for wildlife photography
  • ✅ Cooler temperatures — comfortable ride
  • ✅ Higher tiger sighting probability
  • ✅ Elephant herds at waterhole
Evening Safari — Also Good
  • ✅ Golden hour lighting for photos
  • ✅ Deer and sambar grazing in open
  • ✅ Predators begin evening hunt
  • ✅ Bird activity increases at dusk
  • ⚠️ Slightly lower tiger probability

Best strategy: If you have 2 days, do a morning safari in Chilla zone and an evening safari in Motichur zone for maximum wildlife variety.

Important Guidelines

Rajaji National Park Safari Rules & Regulations

Follow these Forest Department rules to ensure a safe, enjoyable and responsible safari experience

No Getting Off the Jeep — Visitors must remain seated in the Gypsy at all times during the safari. Getting off or standing is strictly prohibited in the core zone.

Silence is Golden — Loud talking, music, clapping or unnecessary noise disturbs wildlife. Maintain silence especially when an animal is spotted nearby.

No Smoking or Alcohol — Smoking, chewing tobacco and carrying alcohol into the park is strictly prohibited and can result in permit cancellation.

No Littering — Carry a bag for your waste. Throwing food, wrappers or any material inside the park is illegal and invites heavy fines.

Phone Flash Off — Mobile phone flash photography is not allowed. It disturbs animals. Use a DSLR with appropriate lens if you have a camera permit.

Be Punctual — Arrive at the gate at least 20 minutes before your safari time. Late arrivals may forfeit their slot without refund.

Wear Neutral Colours — Avoid bright red, white or neon clothing. Wear earthy greens, browns and khakis to blend in and avoid startling wildlife.

Carry Original ID Proof — Original government-issued ID matching your permit is mandatory at the entry gate. Photocopies or digital IDs may not be accepted.

Respect Wildlife Distance — Do not encourage the driver to approach animals too closely. The guide will maintain a safe distance for both your safety and the animal's comfort.

Do Not Collect Anything — Picking flowers, leaves, stones or any natural material from inside the park is strictly illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Violation Penalty: Violation of Forest Department rules inside Rajaji National Park can result in immediate expulsion, cancellation of permit without refund, and legal action under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the Indian Forest Act. Always follow your naturalist guide's instructions.

FAQ

Safari Booking — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your Rajaji National Park jungle safari

During peak season (November to February), book at least 2–3 weeks in advance — Chilla zone slots in particular fill within 24–48 hours. During spring (March–April), 1 week advance booking is usually sufficient. In summer (May–June), slots are more readily available and 3–5 days ahead is fine. For weekends and public holidays, always book earlier than usual. Same-day walk-in bookings are possible only if slots remain — do not rely on this during peak season.

Yes, online booking is available through the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal. You will need: (1) Aadhaar Card or Voter ID for Indian nationals, (2) Passport number for foreign nationals, (3) names and ages of all visitors, (4) a valid email address for permit delivery, and (5) a payment method (UPI/Net Banking/Card). Minimum booking lead time is 24 hours before your safari date. Booking via our form above connects you directly with our team for assisted booking.

The Uttarakhand Forest Department's official cancellation policy allows full refund if cancelled 7+ days before the safari date. Cancellations made 3–6 days prior typically incur a 25% deduction. Cancellations within 48 hours of the safari date are generally non-refundable. If the park is closed due to a forest department order, flood, or wildlife emergency on your booked date, a full refund is processed. Always verify the current policy on the official portal at the time of booking, as it may be updated periodically.

Yes, children are allowed on jeep safaris in Rajaji National Park. Children below 5 years typically enter free. Children aged 5 to 12 years pay a concessional entry fee of ₹75 (Indian) or ₹300 (foreign). There is no age-based restriction on who can attend, but children must remain seated throughout the safari and maintain silence. Note that elephant safari may have age restrictions for young children — confirm at the time of booking. Rajaji is a great family destination and the naturalist guides are excellent with children.

No wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed — Rajaji is a real, wild forest, not a zoo. Tigers are present in the park (primarily in Chilla and Motichur zones) but sightings depend on time of year, time of day, weather, and some luck. Morning safaris in Chilla zone during November–March offer the highest probability. Elephants are very commonly seen, with herds of 20–50 appearing regularly in Chilla zone. Even without a tiger sighting, most visitors are thrilled by the elephant herds, diverse birdlife, leopard pugmarks, and the overall jungle atmosphere. We recommend booking at least 2 safaris across different slots and zones for the best overall experience.

Wear: Neutral, earthy colours — khaki, olive green, dark brown, tan or grey. Light jacket or warm layer for winter morning safaris (it can drop to 5°C in December–January at 6 AM in an open jeep). Closed-toe shoes. Cap or hat for summer safaris.

Avoid: Bright colours like red, white, yellow or neon — they disturb wildlife. Strong perfumes or deodorants — animals are sensitive to smell. Anything noisy (jangly jewellery, crinkly bags). High heels or flip flops. Carrying plastic bags inside the park.
