How Does the Rajaji Safari Charge System Work?

The total cost of a safari is made up of multiple components — here is exactly how it is calculated

Component 1 — Entry Fee

Charged per person. Every visitor — including children above 5 — pays an individual entry fee regardless of whether they do a jeep safari or not. This is the park's conservation charge.

Component 2 — Gypsy/Safari Fee

Charged per vehicle, not per person. The Gypsy holds max 6 visitors. Whether you are 1 person or 6, the vehicle charge is the same — which is why groups save significantly.

Component 3 — Camera Permit

Charged per device. DSLR/mirrorless cameras need a separate camera permit. Mobile phones do not need a permit. Video cameras have a higher permit charge.

Component 4 — Guide Fee

A certified naturalist guide is mandatory for all safaris. The guide fee is typically included in the Gypsy safari charge — no separate payment required at the gate.

Simple Formula: Total Safari Cost = (Entry Fee × No. of Persons) + Gypsy Safari Fee + Camera Permit (if applicable). The interactive calculator below calculates this automatically for your group.

FAQ

Rajaji Safari Charges — Frequently Asked Questions

The most searched questions about fees, costs and charges at Rajaji National Park — answered

The total cost of a Rajaji National Park jeep safari depends on your group size and nationality. For Indian tourists: Entry fee is ₹150 per adult, plus ₹2,500 per Gypsy (up to 6 persons). For a group of 6 Indians, total = ₹900 (entry) + ₹2,500 (Gypsy) = ₹3,400 total or ₹567 per person. For foreign tourists: Entry fee ₹600 per adult plus ₹4,500 per Gypsy. A group of 6 foreign visitors pays ₹3,600 (entry) + ₹4,500 (Gypsy) = ₹8,100 total or ₹1,350 per person. Camera permits are additional if applicable.

The Rajaji safari has two separate charges with different bases. The entry fee (₹150 Indian / ₹600 foreign) is per person — every visitor pays this individually. The Gypsy/jeep safari fee (₹2,500 Indian / ₹4,500 foreign) is per vehicle — meaning a group of 6 people shares one vehicle charge equally. This is why a larger group significantly reduces the per-person cost. If you are travelling solo, you pay the full vehicle charge yourself (₹2,500 + ₹150 = ₹2,650 total). If you share with 5 others, your share drops to ₹417 + ₹150 = ₹567.

No — the jeep safari charges are the same across all zones in Rajaji National Park. Whether you book Chilla, Motichur, Jhilmil Jheel, Ranipur or Mohand zone, the Gypsy safari fee is ₹2,500 (Indian) or ₹4,500 (foreign) per vehicle. The entry fee is also the same across all zones. The only safari with a different charge structure is the elephant safari, which is available only in Chilla zone and is charged per person rather than per vehicle, at a higher rate (₹1,200–₹1,500 per person for Indians).

Yes — a DSLR or mirrorless camera requires a separate camera permit purchased at the gate before entry. The charge is ₹200 for Indian visitors and ₹500 for foreign visitors per camera per safari. Mobile phones do not require a permit. Video cameras require a higher permit (₹500 Indian / ₹1,000 foreign). The permit is per device — if you carry 2 DSLR cameras, you need 2 permits. The permit is also per safari slot — if you do morning and evening safari, the camera permit must be re-purchased for each slot. Flash photography is prohibited regardless of permit type.

The charges on this page reflect the Uttarakhand Forest Department's schedule for the 2025–26 season. The Forest Department periodically revises safari charges — typically at the start of a new season (November). Historically, fee revisions at Rajaji have been modest (10–15%) and infrequent. The current rates of ₹150 (Indian adult entry) and ₹2,500 (Indian Gypsy safari) have been stable for the past couple of seasons. We update this page immediately when any fee revision is announced. For absolute certainty on current charges, call the Chilla gate office at +91 1334 267000 or check the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal.

Yes — cash is accepted at all Rajaji National Park gate offices for walk-in bookings. However, there are important caveats: (1) Walk-in bookings at the gate are only possible if slots are available after online pre-bookings, which during peak season (November–February) means same-day Chilla morning slots are almost always full. (2) Some gates now also accept UPI payments — but this varies by gate and is not universal. (3) Camera permits are typically cash-only at most gates. For guaranteed slot booking, online payment through the Forest Department portal is strongly recommended, especially during October–March.
