Entry Fee — What You Are Paying For
Forest Access

Right to enter and move through Rajaji National Park's protected forest area for one safari session (morning or evening, ~3.5 hours).

🛡️
Conservation Contribution

Entry fees go directly to the Uttarakhand Forest Department's Tiger Reserve management fund — funding anti-poaching, habitat restoration and community conservation programs.

Per Entry, Not Per Day

The entry fee covers one safari slot — morning or evening. If you book both a morning and an evening safari on the same day, entry fee is charged for each slot separately.

Context: Is Rajaji Expensive?

At ₹150 entry + ₹2,500 vehicle + ₹300 guide = ₹3,400 total for 6 Indians, Rajaji costs approximately ₹567 per person for a 3.5-hour morning safari inside one of India's finest tiger reserves.

Compared to other Indian national parks — Jim Corbett (₹900+/person), Ranthambore (₹1,500+/person), Kanha (₹1,200+/person) — Rajaji offers outstanding value at roughly half or one-third the price of equivalent tiger reserves.

Why is a Naturalist Guide Mandatory?

The Forest Department of Uttarakhand requires a certified naturalist guide on every Rajaji safari for two reasons. First, guide fees support local employment — most naturalists are from villages bordering the park. Second, guides provide critical wildlife knowledge that significantly improves your sighting success.

A good naturalist knows recent pugmark reports, animal behaviour patterns, which waterhole to watch at a given hour, and how to read the forest's alarm calls. They are not optional extras — they are the difference between a forest drive and a wildlife experience.

Camera permit tip: If you carry a DSLR and a video camera, you need separate permits for each. Mobile phone photography is completely free — no permit required for smartphones regardless of camera quality.

Actual Cost Per Person — By Group Size (Indian Visitors, Gypsy Safari)

Group Size Entry Fee (₹150×n) Vehicle (₹2,500) Guide (₹300) Total Per Person
1 person ₹ 150 ₹ 2,500 ₹ 300 ₹ 2,950 ₹ 2,950
2 people ₹ 300 ₹ 2,500 ₹ 300 ₹ 3,100 ₹ 1,550
4 people ₹ 600 ₹ 2,500 ₹ 300 ₹ 3,400 ₹ 850
6 people Full Gypsy ₹ 900 ₹ 2,500 ₹ 300 ₹ 3,700 ₹ 617

Best value: Always try to fill the Gypsy to its 6-person maximum. At ₹617 per person for a full Gypsy, Rajaji is one of the most affordable tiger reserve safari experiences in India. If your group is smaller, ask the gate if there are other visitors to share the vehicle with.

Yes — entry fees, vehicle charges, guide fees and camera permits are uniform across all five Rajaji safari zones (Chilla, Motichur, Jhilmil Jheel, Ranipur and Mohand). There is no premium charged for the more popular zones such as Chilla.

Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve uses the same fee structure as the national park zones, though as a separate administrative entity, minor variations may occasionally apply — confirm at the Jhilmil gate.

How to Pay — Booking, Payment Modes & Important Rules

Online Booking

Book your safari slot on the official Uttarakhand Forest Department tourism portal up to 45 days in advance. Online booking is strongly recommended for Chilla zone (peak season slots fill 2–3 weeks ahead). Booking confirms your slot — payment is collected at gate.

Walk-in at Gate

Walk-in booking is available at the zone gate on the day of your safari, subject to slot availability. For less popular zones (Ranipur, Mohand), walk-in is almost always possible. For Chilla and Motichur in peak season — pre-book online to avoid disappointment.

Payment Modes at Gate

All zone gates accept: Cash (₹), UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM), Debit and credit cards (most gates). Online pre-bookings do not require advance payment — full payment is made at the gate on safari day. Foreign visitors can pay in INR by card.

Receipt & Refunds

Always collect your official Forest Department receipt at the gate — this is your proof of payment and zone entry permit. Cancellation and refund policies are governed by the Forest Department portal. Cancellations made 48+ hours before safari date typically receive a partial refund.

Important Rules — Know Before You Pay

No outside food or alcohol inside the park. Carrying food items (especially strong-smelling items) inside the forest zone is prohibited and subject to fine.

Plastic bags banned inside Rajaji National Park. Carry water in reusable bottles only. Single-use plastic items are confiscated at the gate.

No standing up in the Gypsy during the safari — Forest Department rule. All passengers must be seated at all times while the vehicle is moving.

No mobile photography restrictions — mobile cameras are free to use, but no flash photography at any time inside the park. Flash disturbs wildlife significantly.

Children under 5 are free for both entry and elephant safari. Children 5–12 pay the reduced rate. Proof of age may be checked at the gate.

Maximum 6 visitors per Gypsy (plus driver and naturalist guide). The vehicle cannot be overloaded. For larger groups, book two Gypsies or one Canter.

FAQ

Ticket Price — Frequently Asked Questions

For a group of 6 Indian adults booking a morning Gypsy safari: entry fee ₹150 × 6 = ₹900 + Gypsy ₹2,500 + naturalist guide ₹300 = ₹3,700 total, or approximately ₹617 per person. If you carry a DSLR camera, add ₹200 for the camera permit. For a solo Indian visitor, the total is ₹2,950 (₹150 entry + ₹2,500 vehicle + ₹300 guide). The vehicle charge is fixed per vehicle regardless of how many passengers are inside — so travelling in a full group of 6 gives the best per-person value.

No — the entry fee, vehicle charge, guide fee and camera permit are the same for both morning and evening safari slots. ₹150 per Indian adult applies regardless of which time slot you choose. If you book both a morning and an evening safari on the same day, full charges apply for each session separately — entry fees and vehicle charges are per slot, not per day.

No — all five Rajaji safari zones charge the same entry and vehicle fees. There is no premium for the more popular zones. Chilla zone (the most popular) costs exactly the same as Mohand or Ranipur (the least visited). This is a Forest Department policy that ensures pricing is equitable regardless of which zone you choose. The only pricing difference is for the elephant safari — which is available exclusively in Chilla zone at ₹500 per Indian adult, in addition to standard entry and vehicle fees.

The naturalist guide fee of ₹300 is mandatory at all Rajaji safari zones — you cannot enter the forest without a licensed guide. This is a Forest Department rule, not an optional service. Beyond the regulatory requirement, a skilled naturalist dramatically improves your safari experience — they know recent wildlife activity reports, can read jungle signs that visitors miss, and navigate the guide rotation system that determines which zones each vehicle covers on a given morning. The ₹300 guide fee is one of the best-value parts of the entire safari cost.

No — all payments at Rajaji National Park gates are made in Indian Rupees (INR) only. Foreign visitors are charged at the higher foreign rate (₹600 entry, ₹4,500 vehicle) but payment must be in INR. Most zone gates accept UPI payments and major debit/credit cards — Visa, Mastercard and Rupay are widely accepted. Foreign visitors should carry sufficient INR cash as a backup, or use an international card that supports chip payment. Currency exchange is available at Haridwar city centre and Dehradun before your safari.
